For years, former Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello held a development camp only in September, but new GM Mathieu Darche will be holding it way earlier, on June 30.

For years, the New York Islanders' development camp didn't open until September, under Lou Lamoriello, yes, after the draft, after summer workouts, and just days before training camp.
It was frustrating, especially as all the other teams brought their newest draft picks, college kids, and depth prospects in for July camps.
However, the Islanders and new GM Mathieu Darche are doing things completely differently, which is now starting on June 30th.
This earlier development camp may not seem like a huge deal, but it's symbolic and strategic. It means the organization wants to truly develop players.
It gives new draft picks a chance to meet the staff, skate with teammates, and get proper evaluations months before training camp, and it gives fans a window into the future.

A scrimmage tournament will also begin in July

There will also be a scrimmage camp on July 2nd. This isn't just about filling seats on a summer afternoon. It's a critical piece of both player development and for fans.
For the coaching staff, it offers an opportunity to evaluate young talent in a competitive, game-like setting.
The earlier start date of the developmental camp and a new scrimmage game are way down the list of things the organization needs to do to be a legitimate Stanley Cup contender, but it's another sign that things are changing for the team under Darche.
