Matthew Schaefer has a message for Islanders doubters heading into this season, and it sounds exactly like something the confident young defenseman would say.

Nobody expected an eighteen year old blueliner to carry this much weight for a franchise, but Matthew Schaefer did exactly that during his rookie campaign.
After going first overall in the 2025 draft, he put together one of the best debut seasons a defenseman has ever had on Long Island, finishing with 23 goals and 36 assists for 59 points across 82 games.
That kind of production from a first year rookie defender does not happen often, and it turned plenty of skeptics into believers almost overnight.

A rookie year built to shut down doubt

Still, not everyone has been fully sold on what the Islanders can accomplish this season.
Between roster questions and a crowded Metropolitan Division, outside voices have continued to poke holes in New York's chances.
Schaefer, according to Stefen Rosner, made it clear he could not care less about the noise, embracing the criticism with the kind of swagger that has become his trademark since arriving in the league.
"I love when haters hate."

Confidence that matches the swagger

That mentality has already shown up in how the coaching staff talks about him.
Head coach Pete DeBoer has floated the idea of shifting Schaefer to the right side this season, a sign of how much trust the franchise has placed in a player who is still just nineteen years old.
With his poise, production and now his willingness to embrace doubters publicly, Schaefer looks like a player ready to push the Islanders past low expectations once again.
