Wayne Gretzky Finally Apologizes for Offensive Comments on the New Jersey Devils Organization
Back in the 1980's, there was no more dominant force in sports than Wayne Gretzky, who was having his way with opposing teams en route to an untouchable point scoring record in the NHL.
The team he dominated the most however was arguably the New Jersey Devils, who he posted eight points against in one game as the team, newly arrived from Colorado slumped to a 2-18 record through their first 20 games.
This led to one of the most iconic insults in sports history that is still remembered three decades later, with the Great One labelling them a 'Mickey Mouse franchise'.
"How long has it been for them? Three years? Five? Seven? Probably closer to nine. Well, it's about time they got their act together. They're ruining the whole league. They better stop running a Mickey Mouse organization and put somebody on the ice."
Over 30 years later, it's a story worth remembering, despite the fact that Gretzky would apologize almost immediately in the Edmonton Sun, admitting that he regrets making the statement on the struggling team.
«In the apology I said that I regretted the statements I made. It wasn't any of my business to say anything like that."
All this time later, the Devils put together one of the best runs of any NHL team in the late 90's and early 2000's behind
Martin Brodeur and their talented squad, but they almost didn't make it that far after their struggles and Gretzky's comments.
30 years later, players can sometimes say much worse to their opponents, but with the weight it carried from being the Great One, this one could have ruined the franchise, but now, they look to get back into the Stanley Cup Finals with this talented young team they've got leading the way.
