Jack Hughes explains why playing alongside brother Quinn like Matthew and Brady Tkachuk in Florida is not so simple for the Devils star and his brother Luke.
Jack Hughes has watched the Tkachuk brothers become the most talked about sibling duo in hockey since Brady joined Matthew in Florida this summer, and it was only a matter of time before someone asked the Devils star if he wishes he could do the same with Quinn.
His answer was more layered than a simple yes.
Hughes explained that moving Brady's contract was always going to be an easier lift than moving Quinn's next deal, which is expected to reset the market for defensemen once Minnesota locks him up.
Two brothers sharing a locker room is one thing.
Three, according to Hughes, brings a different level of complexity that goes well beyond wanting to play together.
A brother's perspective on a complicated situation
Hughes was quick to point out that he already gets to live out a version of that dream every day with Luke in New Jersey, and he does not take that for granted.
He also made clear there is genuine excitement for Matthew and Brady as they begin this new chapter together in South Florida, calling it a special situation for two brothers to share and one that carries plenty of meaning given everything the Tkachuk family has gone through to get here.
"No, not at all because there's so much that goes into play, right? Brady's making $8.1 (million). I mean, that's a much easier contract to move. Me and Luke are playing together. Matthew and Brady are now playing together. It's much easier for two brothers to play together than three. And then on top of that, Quinn is one of the best players in the league and has a huge deal that's going to be coming. Yeah, I'm happy for Matthew and Brady because I know how much fun they'll have because I get to do that with Luke, and I'm excited for them."

What comes next for the Hughes family
Quinn remains one of the most complete players in the league, and Minnesota has made no secret of its intention to sign him long term.
Whether a Hughes reunion in New Jersey ever becomes realistic will likely depend on how that Wild extension shakes out, but for now Jack sounds content watching his brother thrive in Minnesota while he builds something special of his own with Luke.
