The Nashville Predators listened to offers on Ryan O'Reilly at the trade deadline, but now we know the ridiculous asking price they had for the veteran.
It's no secret that the Nashville Predators were one of the worst teams in the NHL this past season, and at the trade deadline, that resulted in plenty of attention for some of their top names.
That includes Ryan O'Reilly, and given that the team are likely looking to get younger, it makes sense that they would be listening to offers on the veteran centre.
Now, a report has emerged that reveals their asking price, and now, it makes plenty of sense why ROR remains with Nashville, as they asked an astronomical amount from the New Jersey Devils to acquire him.
According to The RG, the Devils were pursuing O'Reilly, but were not willing to pay up for him, and then they tried to save face with their fanbase by justifying not spending big to improve their team.
The Devils were pursuing Ryan O'Reilly, and they did not want to pay a premium to get him. Saying the team came in second was a way to save face for not utilizing the cap space at the deadline.
So what exactly was it that Nashville asked for from New Jersey to acquire O'Reilly? According to The RG, they demanded
Simon Nemec,
Dawson Mercer and a first-round pick for a 34-year old that hasn't been playing at an elite offensive level for years now.
You certainly can't fault GM Barry Trotz and the Predators for trying to land not one but two blue chip prospects for O'Reilly, but that's a ridiculous ask, and it's no wonder that New Jersey walked away, and ultimately, their lack of big moves at the deadline cost them as they fell in round one of the Stanley Cup Playoffs to the Carolina Hurricanes.
