Montreal Canadiens Get Terrible News on Samuel Montembeault Ahead of Possible Elimination

The Montreal Candiens have overachieved in a big way in 2024/25, and while many didn't expect them to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs, they've made their first-round matchup with the Washington Capitals incredibly competitive.

Unfortunately for Montreal however, the series now shifts back to Washington with the team facing a 3-1 deficit, with the hope that they can save off elimination and get this series back to the Bell Centre for Game 6.

Now, the bad news keeps coming for the Canadiens, as it has been revealed that starting goaltender Sam Montembeault, who missed the Game 4 defeat in Montreal has not travelled to Washington for a must-win matchup on Wednesday night.

This is a huge loss for Montreal, who turned to rookie Jakub Dobes for their Game 4 defeat, and while he was solid, he gave up three goals on 24 shots as the team would fall 5-2 in heartbreaking fashion in front of their home fans.

Up against arguably the best offensive team in the NHL, it was always going to be an uphill battle for Montreal in this series regardless of who was in net, but without Montembeault, the Canadiens chances of victory become that much slimmer.

Ultimately, this 2024/25 campaign can be seen as nothing but a major success in Montreal, with the future for this Canadiens team being brighter than almost any other team in the league, but if they do lose due to this injury, it's safe to say that those fans that supported the team all year will be devastated.
