Arber Xhekaj is still outside Martin St-Louis' Game 2 plan, and this one says plenty about Montreal's blue-line pecking order.

The Canadiens are not treating Game 1 like a lucky bounce. They are treating it like a lineup answer.
Jayden Struble staying in over Xhekaj after a 6-2 road win in Carolina is a coaching tell.
Struble gave Montreal a cleaner third-pairing look, finishing at +2 while playing 14:10.
That matters against the Hurricanes, because Carolina forces defensemen to retrieve, move, and survive pressure without turning every shift into chaos.

Martin St-Louis is choosing mobility over muscle

This is not just about one defenseman sitting. It is about St-Louis trusting a style that travels in a playoff road building.
Xhekaj brings size and bite, but the Canadiens do not need every series to turn into a net-front wrestling match.
Against Carolina, the better bet is controlled exits, quick feet, and fewer extended defensive-zone shifts.
That is where Struble has pushed ahead. He does not need to take over the game to justify the decision.
He only has to keep the third pair stable, avoid bad penalties, and make the first pass under heat.
Joe Veleno also remains out, while Oliver Kapanen keeps his spot after Montreal's Game 1 response.
That tells the room the same thing: no regular owns a sweater right now.
Brendan Gallagher being outside the mix only adds weight to it, because St-Louis is not coaching reputations.
He is coaching the matchup.
For Xhekaj, the door is not closed, but the message is sharp. His next chance has to come with more than edge.
It has to come with cleaner reads, faster decisions, and a shift profile St-Louis can trust late in a playoff game.
