Lane Hutson is expected to get a big new deal after winning the Calder Trophy, but now it's been revealed the team may wait for Luke Hughes before signing a deal.
Last season, Lane Hutson burst onto the scene in the NHL, and while he's always heard the criticism about being too small, that has still yet to stop him from thriving at any level of hockey he's played.
The National Hockey League was seemingly no different, as the 21-year old tallied 6 goals and 66 points en route to
winning the Calder Trophy and marketing himself as one of the most exciting young names in the league.
No extension incoming for the Calder Trophy winner
However, despite being eligible for an extension, there's been very little movement on that front, with the team and player seemingly willing to be patient as the Canadiens look to lock him in for the future.
Now, NHL Insider Cam Robinson has revealed one reason why we may not have seen a deal get done yet, as he notes that the team and player are waiting to see how things play out with Luke Hughes before signing a new deal.
Currently, Hughes is an RFA with the New Jersey Devils, but the talent comparison with Hutson is a great comparable, with Montreal and Hutson both seemingly wanting to know what a number looks like elsewhere before locking in a long-term deal.
Over the next several years, Hutson could blow Hughes' production out of the water or he could take a step back and Hughes could catch up, but either way, the player right now believes he's better than Hughes, and all indications are that both Hutson and the Canadiens are willing to wait until next year to see how things play out before getting a deal done.
