Friedman believes Montreal Canadiens are pursuing former NHL award winner Ryan O'Reilly

The 2026 NHL trade deadline is almost upon us, and while we're yet to see a blockbuster move following the 2026 Olympic Games, with the deadline just a matter of days away, it's only a matter of time.

One team that's expected to be rather busy are the Montreal Canadiens, and while they're still a young, up-and-coming team, if they can be good at the deadline and make some upgrades, they're seen as a genuine Stanley Cup threat in the East.

One player the team are reportedly targeting is former Stanley Cup winner Ryan O'Reilly, who would likely be open to being moved to a contending team if the deal is right.

However, according to Elliotte Friedman, it may not be feasible, but if the Canadiens can find a way to make the right offer and make everything work, it could be a move that helps both them and Nashville.

As of right now, the Canadiens have one glaring weakness, and that's a lack of upside and experience at the 2C spot, something that O'Reilly would fill perfectly if they could make it happen.

This season, the 35-year old has posted 21 goals and 57 points in 58 games for a struggling Predators team, and if he gets thrust into a post-season race, he could likely take his game up a notch too.

Ultimately, expect to hear Montreal poking around on several big names in the coming weeks, and while it may not be O'Reilly, they're bound to make a major upgrade ahead of the 2026 trade deadline.
