Former Leafs calls out Montreal Canadiens defenseman for refusing to fight Max Domi
A former member of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization called out the Montreal Canadiens defenseman David Savard for refusing to fight Max Domi.
On Saturday night, the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs met on the ice for the second time this season. The last time these teams faced off was for the first game of the year when goaltender Samuel Montembeault had a shutout to help the Habs win 1-0.
Craig Berube and his men performed much better this time, beating the Canadiens 4-1.
During the game, an incident occurred between the Habs defenseman David Savard and Leafs forward and former Canadiens Max Domi. Savard refused to answer for his actions and turned down Domi's offer to drop the gloves.
In his defense, Savard did decide to drop the gloves at some point, but referees intervened before the fight could start.
Watch the whole incident in the video below:
Jay Rosehill, a former Leafs, shared his opinion on the "Leafs Morning Take" podcast.
He stated that whenever players get challenged in the NHL, they must defend themselves. They can't walk away and hide as Savard did.
In his own words:
"Look, it doesn't really matter what the deal is, or who it is, or what happened," Rosehill said of the incident. "When a guy challenges you at that level, you have two options. You can step up and accept - and that doesn't mean stand up and go toe to toe - but take your s**t off and defend yourself. Or you can pretend like you don't know what's going on, tuck your chin and hide and look around and scream for the ref and linesmen to save you."
"One version of it, you can have pride in. Another version, you should be embarrassed about it," he said. "I just love Domi, I love the way that he eats the crosscheck and then turns around and is like, 'You think I'm going to f***ing stand for that?'"
"I don't know how you sleep after that or call your dad and ask if he's proud," Rosehill concluded. "I wouldn't be able to sleep at night because it's so chicken-s**t and right on display that you're kind of gutless."
Savard isn't known for his fighting skills, while Domi often stirs things up with his gritty style and physicality.
