David Savard played his final game in the NHL on Wednesday, and after the game, he was fighting back tears as he walked off the ice for the last time.
In the past few weeks alone, the NHL has bid farewell to the likes of Cal Clutterbuck,
Patrick Maroon and
Alec Martinez, and after bowing out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, we saw another on Wednesday night.
After the Montreal Canadiens bowed out of the post-season with a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the No. 1 seeded Washington Capitals, the team came together to bid farewell to David Savard.
It was an incredibly emotional scene as the veteran blue liner was surrounded by his teammates feeling the love, and unsurprisingly, he was fighting back tears in a very emotional moment.
Back in the 2009 NHL Draft, Savard was a fourth-round pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets, and after playing with them until 2020, he found his way to Tampa Bay, where he would hoist the Stanley Cup for the first and only time in his lengthy career.
Then, the Saint-Hyacinthe native would come home to the Montreal Canadiens, playing out the final four years of his career as a Hab as consistently as he played the rest of his fantastic run at the NHL level.
In the end, Savard played in 870 games at the NHL level, tallying 54 goals and 242 points in that time, and while he never reached the heights of a star, he was as reliable as anyone in the NHL on a nightly basis.
This final moment for Savard would have no doubt been incredibly emotional, and while it would have been better on home ice, it was a great way to bid farewell to a veteran and a true representative of the NHL.
