The Montreal Canadiens recently made a change behind the bench, and as a result, they've hired a brand new goalie coach in a surprise AHL move.
The Montreal Canadiens have one of the youngest and most exciting rosters in the entire National Hockey League, and while the future looks very promising, they're not dominating they way some would have hoped this season.
One of the reasons for that is the up-and-down play of Samuel Montembeault and everyone in net this year, with every goaltender flashing immense potential but being unable to continue that play at a consistent level.
Canadiens make new hiring after recent move
In what was seen as a move that was a long time coming, the team moved on from goaltending coach Eric Raymond, and in the process promoted Laval Rocket goaltending coach Marco Marciano.
That move came a few weeks ago, and now, with the Laval Rocket in the AHL still looking like a contending team, they've made a new hiring, as officially announced on their social media.
According to the report, they have hired Ilia Ejov, a long time KHL goaltender who joined the LNAH last season, the third tier professional league in Quebec, but at 39-years of age, he's now officially made the move to coaching with the Rocket.
In the AHL, this is a team that's still got top prospect Jacob Fowler in net, so in Ejov, they're hoping to get someone that can mentor the young goaltenders coming through the organization, and if handled correctly, Fowler and Jakub Dobes could be a great tandem for years and years to come.
