The Montreal Canadiens want Zach Whitecloud. The catch isn't whether Calgary sells - it's that Montreal keeps offering the one thing the Flames can't use.

Every Habs outlet has landed on the same trade chip. Send Arber Xhekaj to Calgary, pry loose the right-shot defenseman Kent Hughes has chased for two summers.
The logic feels clean until you check Calgary's blue line. The rebuilding Flames are drowning in left-shot defensemen, not short one.
Zayne Parekh is already slotted on the left. Simon Nemec, Kevin Bahl and Hunter Brzustewicz crowd the same side, and Craig Conroy has signaled another blueliner is likely moving before opening night.
Xhekaj shoots left. He solves nothing in Calgary, which is exactly why the tidy Xhekaj-for-Whitecloud framing collapses on contact.

The price is a pick, not a personality

Conroy's ask has been reported for weeks, and it isn't grit. It's a first-round pick, the same currency the Rasmus Andersson trade sent to Vegas in January, when Whitecloud arrived.
That trade tree matters. Conroy acquired Whitecloud as a flip asset and prices him like one, which is why Ottawa and Boston keep circling per David Pagnotta.
Montreal spent two years hoarding picks. Handing one back for a 29-year-old bottom-pair veteran is a different conversation than moving a healthy scratch.
None of that means the fit is fake.
Whitecloud lets Lane Hutson slide to his natural side and pushes David Reinbacher's timeline back a year.

Why Frost is the bigger trap

The Frost fallback is worse.
Hughes said plainly after Montreal's Eastern Conference Final run that any additions must fit the long-term timeline, not serve as rentals.
Morgan Frost has one year left before free agency. He is the exact rental Hughes just ruled out.
Whitecloud fits the roster, but only a first-round pick unlocks him, and that's the trade Habs fans haven't actually been sold yet.
At this time, Xhekaj going back the other way seems less likely.

Should Hughes give up a first-round pick for Whitecloud?
