Metropolitan Division team suddenly poking around on Connor Hellebuyck

David Pagnotta keeps linking Carolina to Connor Hellebuyck.
The Cup champs may be the suitor least likely to actually do it however.
Pagnotta's exact framing matters more than the headline it generated. On the Hello Hockey podcast, he tied the live Hellebuyck talks to Buffalo, then added that Carolina is "always poking around," so it wouldn't shock him if that continued.

That is baseline behavior, not a targeted pursuit. Eric Tulsky calls on nearly every available name, and a general manager who checks a price is not the same as one preparing to pay it.
The tell is Carolina's own summer.
The Hurricanes just won the Stanley Cup in June with a crease that cost almost nothing.
Brandon Bussi, claimed off waivers from Florida, went 31-6-2 and lifted the Cup. Alongside Pyotr Kochetkov, that tandem carries roughly $3.9 million next season.
The math nobody is putting next to the rumor
Hellebuyck's cap hit is $8.5 million, with five years left through 2030-31 and a full no-movement clause.
He is owed that money until he turns 38.
Carolina would be paying $4.6 million more for one goalie than it currently pays for two, one of whom already has a ring. That is the opposite of the club's proven model.
Why the reported offer is the real signal
The package Carolina reportedly floated, Alexander Nikishin plus a late first-round pick, was widely read as light for a three-time Vezina winner. That is not a mistake; it is a value shop.
Hellebuyck's .895 save percentage across 57 games gives Tulsky every reason to bid low and walk if Winnipeg says no. Meanwhile, Hellebuyck's reported willingness to waive has pointed at Buffalo, not Raleigh.
Carolina pokes at everything, just built the blueprint against this exact deal, and would need Winnipeg to blink first.
Treat the smoke accordingly.
