NHL journeyman has officially called it a career with retirement announcement

The number that defines him isn't 53 NHL games - it's the other 847.

The Kleinburg, Ontario native went undrafted, signed with Colorado on an AHL deal in 2012, and made his NHL debut in November 2014. He scored his first NHL goal more than four years later, in February 2019 against Vegas.

He had already captured World U17 gold with Canada in 2008 and would set Niagara franchise records for goals and points. He still went undrafted.

By the end he had dressed for six NHL clubs and ten AHL teams.

Utah's alumni tribute framed the whole journey as a celebration.

Every recap is running that same bio. Nobody is asking what a player like this was actually paid to do for a decade.

Agozzino wasn't a failed NHLer. He was a professional captain.

He wore the 'C' for three seasons in Niagara, then won the OHL's Mickey Renaud Captain's Trophy - an award for leadership, not scoring.

He later captained the San Jose Barracuda. His real assignment, from San Diego to Colorado to Tucson, was to anchor a room full of 20-year-olds and teach them to be pros.

That work spanned 847 AHL games and 662 points, but its true output was other players' careers.

Teams now lean on younger, cheaper depth and shorter veteran leashes, squeezing out the ten-year farm captain. That matters, because those veterans are the league's next coaching class.
