Flyers throw a wrench in Quinn Hughes' contract negotiations with the Wild

Michael Russo dropped a significant detail on The Sheet with Jeff Marek this week, pointing to a single moment that altered the trajectory of Quinn Hughes' contract talks with the Minnesota Wild.
According to the Athletic insider, the Philadelphia Flyers' offer sheet for Leo Carlsson fundamentally reshaped what Minnesota expected to pay its star defenseman.
I just think that the type of concept that the Wild probably thought...changed probably the second that Philly did that [Leo Carlsson] offer sheet; I still think...it's gonna get done, but...now it's a true negotiation.
Why the Carlsson Offer Sheet Matters
Philadelphia's five-year, $90 million offer sheet for Carlsson, which Anaheim ultimately matched, reset the market for young stars league-wide.
Combined with Kirill Kaprizov's $17 million cap hit and Macklin Celebrini's $18.8 million extension in San Jose, the top of the NHL's pay scale has climbed faster than most front offices anticipated.
Hughes, coming off a 76-point season split between Vancouver and Minnesota, now negotiates against comparables that did not exist when talks began July 1.
Where Things Stand
Term remains the central sticking point. General manager Bill Guerin reportedly wants a long-term deal, ideally locked in before the NHL's maximum contract length drops from eight to seven years on September 16.
Hughes has shown some interest in a shorter bridge deal, which could align his next free agency with brother Jack Hughes' situation in New Jersey.
Despite the delay, Russo still expects Hughes to sign in Minnesota, citing a sense of loyalty toward Guerin for the assets the Wild surrendered to acquire him from Vancouver.
