Fans react to Ivan Barbashev being traded to Canadiens in latest blockbuster proposal

Montreal fans got a jolt on Friday when a hypothetical trade proposal started making the rounds, pairing the Canadiens with Vegas Golden Knights winger Ivan Barbashev.

The idea, floated by the Hockey Trade Rumors account, would send Arber Xhekaj, Owen Beck and a 2027 second round pick to Vegas in exchange for the physical power forward.

It is worth stressing this is a thought exercise, not an actual negotiation, but it is the kind of scenario that gets a fan base talking, especially with Kent Hughes known for exploring every avenue to improve his roster.

Barbashev is coming off a strong 61 point season with a plus 20 rating in Vegas, numbers that would slot him right into Martin St-Louis top six.

Whether he ends up next to Ivan Demidov or rounding out a line with Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield, his combination of speed, grit and scoring touch is exactly the kind of middle six upgrade Montreal has been chasing.

His $5 million cap hit is also very manageable given the term left on his deal.

The catch is the price. Xhekaj remains one of Montreal's most beloved young defensemen and is still unsigned as a restricted free agent, while Beck represents the kind of controllable center depth teams covet.

Adding a second round pick on top makes it a steep ask.

For Vegas, moving Barbashev would open up cap space that could be redirected toward a bigger swing, with names like Dylan Larkin floated as the type of player the Golden Knights could pursue.

For Montreal, it comes down to whether ownership believes Barbashev is enough of an upgrade to justify giving up that much young talent in one shot.

Nothing here is close to happening, but it shows the kind of speculation swirling around the Canadiens as the offseason rolls on.

Kent Hughes has built a reputation for being aggressive when the right deal presents itself, so nobody in Montreal is ruling anything out just yet.
