Bill Guerin's patience with Quinn Hughes now comes with a hard deadline

The new collective bargaining agreement takes full effect on September 16, 2026.

On that date, the maximum extension term with a player's own club drops from eight years to seven, signing bonuses become capped at 60 percent of total contract value, and the lowest-paid season of a deal must be worth at least 71 percent of the highest.

Guerin, in comments shared by Daily Faceoff, said he has stayed in contact with Quinn Hughes' camp without offering any timetable.

That patience reads differently once the calendar is attached to it.

Wild owner Craig Leipold said in June that Hughes will re-sign, and that the player may prefer shorter term, floating three years as a possibility. Short term is not the problem.

Under the current rules, a three-year deal can be built almost entirely from signing bonuses and paid heavily in year one. That is how a club compensates a star for accepting less term, and it is the exact lever that disappears on September 16.

Hughes turns 27 in October and posted five goals and 53 points in 48 games after the December trade that cost Minnesota Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, Liam Ohgren and a first-round pick.

A front office that paid that price wants eight years of protection. A player who wants flexibility wants the bonus-heavy structure, and both options expire on the same afternoon.

Every unsigned extension candidate in the league is standing at that same wall, which is why so many long-term deals landed early.

Guerin is one of the few still waiting.

Passing September 15 does not end this negotiation.

It removes the two tools that made a compromise easy.
