Connor Hellebuyck trade talks have revealed a brand new obstacle for the Jets

The Connor Hellebuyck trade talk keeps circling price. The real obstacle is a set of contract clauses that switched on July 1.
Hellebuyck holds a full no-movement clause through 2026-27 that converts to a 10-team no-trade list on July 1, 2027. Winnipeg cannot send him anywhere he does not personally approve.
He signed a seven-year, $59.5 million extension on October 9, 2023, carrying an $8.5 million cap hit through 2030-31.
That clause is familiar. Less familiar: two of the Buffalo Sabres players Winnipeg keeps asking about gained protection of their own this summer.
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen can submit a five-team no-trade list starting in 2026-27, per PuckPedia. Josh Norris can submit ten.
The consent stack nobody is counting
Elliotte Friedman noted after the draft that some rumored Sabres returns carried new no-trade protection. That single line explains the stall better than any argument about draft picks.
David Pagnotta reported Winnipeg wants Luukkonen, a middle-six forward and a premium prospect.
Every version of that package needs a second and third signature, not only Hellebuyck's.
Kevin Cheveldayoff is not simply negotiating with Jarmo Kekalainen. He is negotiating with three sets of agents at once.
At some point, he may be forced to accept a trade that isn't what he had hoped for, which could create ripple effect problems in the seasons ahead.
Why the price keeps moving
Buffalo already spent the fourth overall pick on Daxon Rudolph, so the framework that nearly worked in June is gone. Rebuilding it means finding pieces who have no say in where they land.
That pushes the return toward prospects and futures rather than the roster forwards Cheveldayoff has said he wants. It also explains why these talks stay open without ever closing.
Hellebuyck went 23-23-11 with a 2.86 goals-against average last season, then posted a .956 save percentage winning Olympic gold in February. The league has not stopped believing in him.
It has simply run into his calendar.
