Promising hockey defenseman Amir Khanov passes away at the young age of 19

Amir Khanov died on July 30. His agent, Valery Zatsepin, told TASS the funeral was held the following day.
The 19-year-old defenseman lost consciousness at a clay-modelling class in Ufa, where he had gone with his girlfriend.
It should be noted that preliminary reports said he passed away on August 3, but July 30 is the confirmed new date.
What his medical file actually showed
Zatsepin said Khanov completed in-depth medical screening in July 2025 and again in February. No abnormalities were found, he was cleared for competition, and he was training for the coming season when he collapsed.
That complicates an unnamed TASS source who suggested Khanov had heart trouble. A preliminary blood clot remains the working explanation, per Zatsepin, and no final determination has been released.
The player behind the headline
Khanov spent 2017 to 2023 inside the Salavat Yulaev system, born in the village of Avdon just outside Ufa. In 2022-23 he was the highest-scoring defenseman on the club's 2007 team in the Povolzhye region championship, with five goals and 20 assists across 43 games.
He won the Sirius Cup with the Privolzhsky Federal District squad in June 2022. From there came two seasons in the NMHL, first with Polyot Rybinsk and then HK Samara, where he recorded two assists in six games last year.
At six-foot-one and 154 pounds, he was still filling out. Defensemen at 19 are unfinished by definition, which is the part that will sit with the people who coached him.
