While Toronto waits on Morgan Rielly, other players surface in trade talks

Reports have Toronto sitting roughly $2.75 million above the $104 million ceiling, with Dakota Joshua and Steven Lorentz also available.

Clubs are permitted to carry up to ten percent above the upper limit through the offseason, which gives Toronto about $10.4 million of legal breathing room right now.

The real pressure point is 2027-28.

Toronto already has essentially its entire roster under contract for that season, and the cap is projected to rise again by roughly $9.5 million.

A rising cap only helps a team with somewhere to spend it. Rielly's $7.5 million runs four more years, meaning he is still on the books when that window finally opens.

Moving him now converts a fixed cost into future flexibility before the money actually arrives.

Keeping him means next summer's raise gets swallowed by a contract signed under a previous front office.

Joshua at $3.25 million and Lorentz at $1.35 million solve August. Rielly solves a problem Chayka inherited and cannot fix twice.

That distinction matters beyond Toronto, because August cap headlines almost never describe a deadline.
