Some Florida Panthers players were reportedly unhappy with Brady Tkachuk's decision to drop the gloves with Jordan Staal during the team's preseason opener, according to insight shared on The Sheet podcast.
Tkachuk, who arrived in South Florida this offseason via a blockbuster trade from Ottawa, wasted no time making his presence felt in his new sweater.
He squared off with Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal in Florida's preseason opener on Sept. 20 at Amerant Bank Arena, a fight that quickly became the headline moment of the night. Not everyone inside the Panthers' locker room was thrilled about it.
There were players on the team that weren't happy or didn't find the benefit of him fighting Jordan Staal in the opening Game 1. The fans loved it, a loss to a 38-year-old, and he did it in their barn. That didn't work the way they wanted it to.
Fans Loved It, Teammates Were Split
The reaction outside the locker room was very different from the one inside it.
Panthers fans embraced the moment, treating it as an early sign of Tkachuk's grit and willingness to set a physical tone for his new team. But the outcome mattered to some players who questioned the timing.
Staal, at 38 years old, got the better of the exchange, and it happened in front of Florida's own home crowd, not exactly the debut some teammates were hoping to see from their new winger.

Fighting has long been part of Tkachuk's game, and dropping the gloves against a respected veteran like Staal fits his reputation as one of the league's most combative forwards.
