New video shows Arizona State workout before Matthew Mayich collapsed from heat stroke

Footage has surfaced of the outdoor session that left Matthew Mayich fighting for his life.

AZFamily obtained the video showing the conditions Mayich and his Arizona State teammates worked through during the Aug. 20 practice, the first the NCAA allowed hockey teams to hold this fall. Mayich, a St. Louis Blues sixth round pick in the 2023 draft, had only been on campus a matter of days before the workout.

The 21 year old collapsed toward the end of the session after showing signs of disorientation and dizziness, according to family attorney Rob Carey, who said the workout ran well over an hour with minimal water available.

Carey has been blunt about the severity of the injury, telling reporters the family needs nothing short of a miracle.

Carey told ESPN the diagnosis is exertional heat stroke, which cut off oxygen flow to Mayich's brain during the practice.

He was clear there were no other contributing conditions involved, pointing directly at exertion combined with the Arizona heat as the cause.

Mayich's parents have pushed for an independent investigation and for coaching staff to step aside during the review so players can speak freely.

Arizona State has acknowledged coaches and training staff were present, along with a third party who previously worked with the program.

The school's athletic director has stressed the review is not an accusation, only an effort to understand what happened that morning.

Mayich remains hospitalized as the Arizona State University Police Department continues its own investigation, with findings expected to go to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.

The hockey community has rallied behind him and his family, who have relocated near the hospital to stay by his side throughout the ordeal.
