Oilers make five roster cuts as training camp battles heat up

The Edmonton Oilers trimmed their training camp roster on Tuesday, assigning defenceman Beau Akey and forward Brady Stonehouse to the Bakersfield Condors while releasing three tryout players who will also head to the AHL club.

Akey, Edmonton's top pick in the 2023 NHL Draft at 56th overall, has battled injuries since turning pro and is looking to carve out a full time role on the Condors blue line this season.

Stonehouse, an undrafted winger out of the Ottawa 67's who impressed enough during his first camp to land a contract, brings a physical, scoring touch style that general manager Stan Bowman's staff hopes translates to the pro game.

Both players are considered part of Edmonton's longer term pipeline rather than players competing for an immediate NHL job this fall.

Sending them down early lets the coaching staff get a clean look at how the rest of the group performs as exhibition games continue.

The bigger transaction news involves the players cut loose entirely.

Simon Tassy, Zach Bookman and Samuel Sjolund were all released from their professional tryout agreements and will report to Bakersfield rather than sticking around Edmonton's main camp.

Tassy, a Montreal native who starred at Wisconsin and helped the Badgers reach the Frozen Four, signed a two way AHL deal with Bakersfield back in the spring.

Sjolund, a big Swedish defenceman who played his college hockey at Western Michigan after originally being a Dallas draft pick, also has a one year AHL contract waiting for him.

Bookman gets a similar opportunity after suiting up with the Condors rookie group.

None of these moves are surprising this deep into camp, but they confirm exactly which depth players Edmonton wants developing in Bakersfield as the 2026-27 season approaches.
