Jeff O'Neill delivers grim Connor McDavid prediction that Oilers fans won't want to hear

Jeff O'Neill says the odds of Connor McDavid staying in Edmonton after his contract are zero, citing a stark warning to the front office.
Connor McDavid's future in Edmonton might already be decided, at least according to TSN's Jeff O'Neill.
On OverDrive this week, the longtime analyst was blunt when asked about the odds of McDavid remaining an Oiler once his new contract runs out.
He put the number at zero.
McDavid, Edmonton's longtime captain, has repeatedly said winning is the only thing that matters to him.
O'Neill's reasoning comes from what he says McDavid communicated directly to the organization.
According to O'Neill, McDavid essentially told the Oilers he has two years to win it all, and if that does not happen, he will look elsewhere.
That is a heavy message for any franchise to sit with, especially one built around two of the sport's best players.
A locker room already feeling the clock
O'Neill did not stop with McDavid.
He also referenced comments from an assistant captain inside the Oilers room, someone who reportedly told teammates to look around and recognize that the window to win is only two years wide.
“I think it's zero. He told them: I got 2 years here, and if we don't win a Cup, I'm gonna do it somewhere else. [...] When your assistant captain says, look around here, we've got 2 years to make this thing happen... I think that means something.”

For O'Neill, that kind of language from a leadership voice inside the dressing room carries real weight.
The context matters here.
McDavid signed a two year extension worth $25 million this offseason, keeping his cap hit at $12,500,000 through the 2027-28 season.
It was a short term bet on both sides, giving Edmonton a defined runway to build a contender around him and Leon Draisaitl, who carries a $14,000,000 cap hit of his own.
Pressure building before puck drop
Edmonton enters the season fresh off a first round exit and a coaching change, with Mike Babcock now running the bench.
Every stumble this year will invite fresh questions about whether O'Neill's prediction is closer to fact than opinion.
For now, it remains one analyst's read on a very loud situation in Edmonton.
Edmonton opens the regular season at home against Vancouver on Tuesday, a fitting stage for the debate to begin.
