Pierre LeBrun hits the Wild with bad news concerning Quinn Hughes

Speaking with Jay Onrait, LeBrun addressed the state of extension talks between Hughes and the Wild, suggesting the star defenseman is comfortable letting the process play out on his own terms.

That patience lines up with what Hughes himself has said publicly. Since becoming extension-eligible on July 1, he has repeatedly stated he wants to take his time and isn't feeling boxed in by outside timelines.

Wild general manager Bill Guerin has expressed confidence a deal will eventually get done, but neither side appears interested in rushing toward the finish line just to make a headline.

Hughes is coming off a standout debut season in Minnesota following his blockbuster trade from Vancouver, posting 53 points in 48 regular-season games before adding 15 more in the playoffs.

His performance has only strengthened the belief that he will command one of the richest contracts for a defenseman in NHL history.

With Cale Makar recently resetting the market at the top of the defenseman pay scale, Hughes and agent Pat Brisson appear content to let those numbers settle before committing to term and salary.

LeBrun's comments reinforce that there is no artificial urgency here, just an ongoing conversation between two sides that both expect to reach an agreement eventually.

For now, Wild fans will have to stay patient as the process unfolds without a firm deadline in sight.
