It's confirmed for John Tortorella and Canadian team immediately after Game 6 loss

John Tortorella is not a candidate for the Edmonton Oilers head coaching position, according to a report that surfaced Monday on X.
The confirmation arrived just hours after the Carolina Hurricanes shut out the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in Game 6, claiming the 2026 Stanley Cup at T-Mobile Arena.
The timing of this report is more significant than the headline itself.
Before Game 6, the prevailing logic was straightforward: if Vegas won, Tortorella would obviously be retained, and if they lost, the Edmonton Oilers might have a genuine opening to pursue him.
Vegas just lost the Cup in six games. Tortorella is still not a candidate.
The search is narrower than anyone is acknowledging
General manager Stan Bowman arrived at this coaching search believing he had several legitimate A-list options to pursue.
Bruce Cassidy remains unavailable, blocked by Vegas with the NHL explicitly declining to intervene.
Mike Babcock is in a holding pattern, with a potential hire contingent on an NHLPA investigation the league has not yet resolved.
And now Tortorella, who Elliotte Friedman floated on 32 Thoughts as a legitimate fit for what Edmonton wants in a head coach, is explicitly ruled out.
Jim Hiller, the former Los Angeles Kings head coach, has been formally interviewed per Friedman. Craig Berube's name has also circulated.
Neither addition changes the reality of what Bowman has lost from the top of his list.
McDavid's window will not wait for the right name to appear
Connor McDavid has two years remaining on his contract, and Leon Draisaitl has publicly stated the Edmonton Oilers are not trending in the right direction.
Bowman has said both stars will have input on the coaching hire. What he cannot explain is how a search this narrow still produces a candidate capable of winning a Stanley Cup with this roster.
The Edmonton Oilers do not have a coaching candidate problem. They have a shrinking list problem, and it just got one name shorter.
