Ilya Samsonov doesn't have a contract heading into 2025/26, and now The Hockey Writers have urged the Oilers to sign the veteran goaltender.
The Edmonton Oilers have been on the doorstep of history for the past two seasons, but at the final hurdle, they've fallen short both times to the Florida Panthers, a team that's won back-to-back Stanley Cups.
One of the biggest issues for the Oilers in that time has been their goaltending, with the team failing to overcome the shortcomings of
Stuart Skinner and
Calvin Pickard.
However,
despite speculation, the team appear to be sticking with the two of them heading into the 2025/26 campaign, with seemingly no viable options presenting themselves for General Manager Stan Bowman.
Is Ilya Samsonov worth a PTO for the Edmonton Oilers?
While there's no blockbuster moves to be made yet, but according to
The Hockey Writers, Bowman and the Oilers should take a one-year shot on former Maple Leafs goaltender Ilya Samsonov, who is primed for a PTO.
That's a topic that's been brought up in Oilers circles before, and as a depth goaltender, it may not end up being a bad move for the team, especially after he performed well for Vegas a season ago.
Last season, Samsonov posted a 2.82 GAA across 29 games with the Golden Knights, and while he's not the long-term answer in the net for Edmonton, all the team need is stability, and if they get that, they may finally take the final step towards winning the Stanley Cup.
Ultimately, the Oilers likely aren't going to make many more big moves ahead of the season, but if they can get Samsonov in the system and build him up as the season goes on, it could be a low risk, high reward move for the organization.
