It is easy to see why a package like this would grab attention.

Detroit has been searching for a true franchise centerpiece for years, and adding a player of McDavid's caliber would instantly change the trajectory of the organization.

Edmonton, meanwhile, would walk away with two young, proven top six forwards, a rising defenseman, a versatile middle six piece and a stack of premium draft capital to retool around Leon Draisaitl.

Plenty of Oilers supporters would balk at moving on from the most dominant player of his generation, especially with Edmonton still viewed as a genuine contender.

Others argue that if a return this substantial ever hit the table, ownership would at least have to think it over given McDavid's contract situation looming.

For Detroit, giving up four core pieces plus four picks is an enormous swing, but pairing McDavid with their young core could turn the Red Wings into an immediate powerhouse in the Atlantic.

There is no indication talks like this are actually happening between the two teams.

It is purely a hypothetical scenario meant to spark conversation, but it does highlight just how much value a player like McDavid commands across the league right now.

Trade ideas like this tend to blow up social media because they force fans to weigh sentiment against asset value.
