Connor McDavid called Darnell Nurse's exit extremely disappointing.
The contract language underneath that quote says something very different.
The Edmonton Oilers captain spoke Monday at the Zach Hyman Celebrity Classic in Toronto, his first extended comment on the July 1 trade.
He said it has been hard to put into words what Nurse meant to him and to the room after eleven years together.
"It's obviously disappointing to lose someone like Darnell and the rest of the guys. But it's part of the business, unfortunately. It's been hard to really put into words what Nursery's been to not only me, but the whole group and everybody in Edmonton. So extremely disappointed to see that happen.”

The reaction framed it as friction between McDavid and general manager Stan Bowman. The paperwork does not support that.
Nurse held the pen, not Bowman
Nurse carried a full no-move clause and requested the trade himself earlier in the offseason, per ESPN. He initially limited his list to Boston, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
When none of those deals materialized, he expanded it on July 1 to include San Jose.
Bowman could not have moved him a day earlier without written permission.
Edmonton still shed four remaining years at $9.25 million with no salary retained, taking back Shakir Mukhamadullin and Zack Sharp. That is not a general manager forcing an exit.
The part nobody clipped
Seconds later, McDavid praised the additions and called it an exciting time in Edmonton, pointing specifically at the new coach.
That coach is Mike Babcock, hired June 23 to replace Kris Knoblauch.
Babcock has said a meeting with McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman is what convinced him to return.
So the captain is now publicly attached to all three pieces of Bowman's summer, the departure, the replacements and the bench.
McDavid is entering the first season of a two-year, $25 million extension that runs to unrestricted free agency in 2028.
That is the real story from a golf-course scrum.
There is no daylight left between the captain and the plan, and no version of 2026-27 where he can say he was only along for the ride.
