Canadiens and Ducks complete a one-for-one player trade

Both players are restricted free agents. Neither has a contract for next season, which makes this a swap of negotiating rights as much as bodies.

The real test comes the first time Martin St-Louis needs a body and must pick between a veteran and a 57-point winger nobody has dressed.

Rights trades rarely change a season.

They do expose how differently two playoff teams read the same production, and that gap is where cheap NHL scoring comes from.
