Connor McDavid's future has been a major talking point in recent weeks, and now he's revealed why he's taking his time with current contract negotiations.
Last season, it was
Leon Draisaitl that waited until September to sign a long-term extension with the Edmonton Oilers, and this summer, fans have eagerly awaited news on the potential re-signing of captain Connor McDavid.
Plenty has been said in the media as of late, but right now, all signs point to the NHL's best player returning to Edmonton on a short-term deal as they look to take the final step towards Stanley Cup glory as a team.
Why McDavid Is Taking His Time With a New Oilers Deal
While
McDavid has made some comments, he hasn't directly addressed his thought process in negotiations, but now, he's done just that, revealing that he's taking his time to get this right.
"I've put everything I have into my career. You only get one chance to do it and to do it right. And that leads to taking your time with it."
What McDavid's Comments Reveal About His Future in Edmonton
Connor's comments show that he's still wanting to remain in Edmonton, the only city he's known as an NHLer thus far, while reiterating that his sights are firmly set on a Stanley Cup.
While the belief is he can get it done in Edmonton, that may be why he is taking his time, to see if he can truly get over the hump with this team, because if he doesn't believe he can, free agency is looming in 2026.
It's not time to panic for Oilers fans yet, but the longer this drags out, the more they may need to end up worrying, but even after these comments, it's more likely than not that he gets a new deal done in Edmonton.
