The Washington Capitals are in the mix for Dylan Larkin, and one young center is already at the heart of the conversation.

According to insider Pierre LeBrun, Washington has engaged with Detroit to a degree, though how seriously remains unclear. The report adds fresh fuel to a saga that has dragged on for months in Detroit.

What LeBrun Is Hearing

LeBrun was careful not to overstate things. Here is what he shared:
My sense is the Caps have engaged to some level, but I can't tell how hard they've pushed. Ilya Protas would be an obvious target for Detroit in any package.
That caution matters. No finalized offer has been reported, and nothing in his comments describes a package the Capitals have put on the table. What he does point to is a likely centerpiece.
Protas, 20, is regarded as the best center prospect in the Washington system, which explains why Detroit would circle his name.

Why the Timing Is Urgent

Larkin asked Detroit for a trade back in May, and the standoff has only grown tougher since. The 30-year-old center was suspended without pay this week after his camp told the Red Wings he had waited long enough.
Washington is reportedly among the destinations on his approved list, which gives the Capitals a legitimate path to a deal.
For Washington, the challenge is balance. Protas and fellow youngsters represent the future of the franchise, so paying a steep price for a 30-year-old would test the front office's patience.
Detroit, meanwhile, has made clear it wants a strong return for its former captain, which leaves both sides with plenty to negotiate.
Expect the rumor cycle to stay loud. With Larkin sidelined and his camp pushing for resolution, Detroit cannot wait forever, and any club hoping to land him will need to move with purpose.
Whether the Capitals are ready to meet Detroit's price is the question to watch in the days ahead.
Fans in both markets will be watching closely, since a deal could reshape the Capitals' center depth and Detroit's direction at the same time.
