Nikita Kucherov has asked the Tampa Bay Lightning for a trade, and the reigning NHL MVP's contract demands are now coming into focus. Insider David Pagnotta revealed what the superstar winger is hoping to land on his next deal.
My understanding, he was looking for a 5, 6, or 7 year deal in the neighbourhood of 18 to 20 million
What Kucherov Wants
That range would place Kucherov among the highest paid players in hockey. Colorado defenseman Cale Makar currently leads the league at $20.4 million per season, so the top of Kucherov's reported ask would put him on equal footing.
It would also be a massive raise. Kucherov is finishing the eight-year, $76 million contract he signed in 2018, which carries a $9.5 million cap hit and expires after this season. That is roughly double what he earns now, a leap few players ever command.
Why Talks Broke Down
Pagnotta also relayed chatter that Tampa Bay presented a four-year offer worth around $15 million per season. The gap between that proposal and Kucherov's reported target, both in term and in dollars, helps explain how negotiations reached this point.
Kucherov holds plenty of leverage. He is coming off an MVP season in which he led the league in scoring, and few players in the NHL can match his production.
That combination makes him one of the few players who can dictate terms. Any suitor will need significant cap space and a willingness to commit long term.
His contract also gives him a say in where he lands. Kucherov must provide the Lightning with a list of 10 teams he would approve a trade to, and Pagnotta has reported that the Montreal Canadiens sit atop it.
Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper has said Kucherov remains committed to the team this season, but the gap between the two sides is difficult to ignore.
The Lightning now face a decision that will shape the franchise for years: meet a historic price or move one of the best players in the world. Expect the trade market to move quickly.
