The Simon Edvinsson contract situation in Detroit just got even messier, and it's not because of money.

It's because nobody even knows who's supposed to be picking up the phone.
The Red Wings blue liner has been stuck in restricted free agent limbo all summer, and the mess in Detroit's front office is making things worse by the day.
Steve Yzerman stepped away as general manager weeks ago, and the club still hasn't found his replacement.
That leaves acting GM Shawn Horcoff handling day to day business, but the franchise altering decisions, like locking up a 23 year old top pairing defenseman, are sitting untouched.
Hockey writer Bob Duff dropped a pretty wild detail about it on the Full Press Hockey Podcast this week.
"Well Edvinsson's agent just recently said like he doesn't know who he's supposed to even be talking to to negotiate a contract..."

- Bob Duff
Duff explained that Edvinsson's camp has essentially been left in the dark, without a clear point of contact to even begin real negotiations.
That's not a small hiccup. That's a franchise cornerstone piece sitting in limbo while the front office sorts itself out.

Why the timing actually matters here

Training camp is closing in fast, and if Detroit wants to get a long term, max eight year deal done, the two sides need an agreement in place by mid September.
Every week that passes without a permanent GM is a week closer to a rushed negotiation, or worse, a bridge deal nobody in Hockeytown really wants.
Edvinsson has been worth the wait on the ice.
He's grown into one of the most trusted young defenders on Detroit's roster since being drafted sixth overall back in 2021.

What comes next for Detroit

Until ownership names a new GM, Edvinsson's camp is stuck waiting by the phone for a call that can't even happen yet.
That's a strange spot for a franchise to be in with one of its most important players.
