Two NHL superstars face uncertain futures as Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid rumors heat up

You know it's been a quiet stretch of the NHL offseason when someone digs up Sidney Crosby trade rumors from two years ago.

Back in the summer of 2024, Crosby was eligible for a contract extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and speculation grew that he could push for a trade to the Colorado Avalanche or his boyhood team, the Montreal Canadiens.

That talk faded once he signed a two year extension that September.

Now he's in a similar spot again, and while the chatter has been much quieter this time around, TV personality Sid Seixeiro decided to stir things up last week, saying he won't believe another extension is coming until he actually sees it.

Seixeiro pointed out that Crosby's patience with general manager Kyle Dubas' rebuild could eventually run out, possibly sending him home to Montreal.

Reality paints a calmer picture.

Josh Yohe of The Athletic reported that talks between the Penguins and Crosby's camp are expected to pick up once the offseason wraps, with a one or two year deal seen as the likely outcome.

Crosby isn't the only franchise cornerstone drawing speculation right now.

Connor McDavid just started year one of his two year extension in Edmonton, but NHL Network's E.J. Hradek is already floating hypothetical landing spots if the superstar ever decides to test the market once that deal runs out in 2028.

Hradek admitted he isn't especially close with McDavid, but he named the Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings as two clubs the center might consider.

He also brought up the New York Rangers, citing their projected cap space and the simple pull of playing in New York.

The catch is that none of those three teams looks like a surefire contender right now, and winning is reportedly McDavid's top priority.

For now, both stars remain right where they are, but that hasn't stopped the speculation machine from running at full speed.
