Red Wings GM search takes another turn as fan-favorite candidate withdraws

The Detroit Red Wings' search for their next general manager just got a little shorter.

Jeff Greenberg, the current general manager of the Detroit Tigers, has withdrawn his name from consideration for Detroit's open hockey operations job.

Greenberg reportedly informed the organization that he wants to finish what he started with the Tigers rather than make the jump across the parking lot to the NHL.

Greenberg's name had been floating around the search since it began.

He spent the 2022-23 season as associate general manager of the Chicago Blackhawks before taking over as Tigers GM, giving him a rare résumé that touched both leagues.

Since both the Tigers and Red Wings fall under Ilitch Holdings, the move would not have even required him to change employers.

Elliotte Friedman and other insiders had connected him to the opening for weeks, though he was never described as the frontrunner.

Detroit has operated without a permanent GM since July 15, when Steve Yzerman transitioned into a senior advisor role.

Assistant GM Shawn Horcoff has handled day-to-day duties in the meantime.

The Red Wings hoped to have a replacement in place by Labor Day, a deadline that has already come and gone.

With training camp set to open Sept. 17, the pressure to make a decision is mounting, and the list of realistic candidates just got a bit shorter.

Names like Florida Panthers assistant GM Brett Peterson, San Jose Sharks assistant GM Jeff Kealty and Dallas Stars assistant GM Scott White remain in the mix as Detroit works to land a replacement before puck drop.

Whoever takes over will immediately face decisions on captain Dylan Larkin and restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson.
