Following the firings of Jim Montgomery and Drew Bannister, the NHL rumor mill has focused on Derek Lalonde as he is set to potentially get fired by the Red Wings.
Currently, the Detroit Red Wings sit just outside of a wild card slot. Heading into this season, there were high aspirations of making the playoffs and finally exiting the bottom half of the NHL.
"Their only three points out of a Wild Card spot and they've got a crucial three-game homestand happening this week. What happens if they go 1 for 3 or 0 for 3? We know that Steve Yzerman is loyal to his coaches, but they have to remain competitive. So if they have a good home stand everything should be fine. If they don't that might force Yzerman to make a decision and the sense is that they would go with an internal interim-candidate and then hope that a top coach eventually becomes available.

However, Lalonde will have a big piece of his offense back as Patrick Kane will be returning from injury for the Detroit Red Wings. Now, we will wait and see how the Red Wings perform over this coming homestand and whether or not they can succeed with Lalonde at the helm or if he will be replaced by a candidate more fit for the Red Wing's future.
