Last night the world of hockey seemed to cross over with the world of combat sports during a game in the AHL.
The Grand Rapids Griffins who are the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings took on the Iowa Wild affiliate of the Minnesota Wild.
During the second period of the game, an altercation began between defenseman William Lagesson of the Griffins and Adam Raska of the Iowa Wild.
The scrum would escalate to the point where William Lagesson had Adam Raska in a UFC-style submission hold at which point Adam Raska tapped out and the officials came rushing in.
The referees were criticized in this situation for not stepping in sooner and allowing such a dangerous action to occur before breaking the pair up.
Now just one day after the incident the AHL has handed down punishment for William Lagesson.
According to multiple sources, William Lagesson has been given a three-game suspension for the incident.
This suspension is the latest setback in what has been a downward spiral for William Lagesson's hopes of returning to the NHL.
After playing parts of three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers and then spending last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Anaheim Ducks William Lagesson has reached rock bottom.
Despite playing well at times in the AHL this moment of lack of composure has likely cost William Lagesson any opportunity he might have at being called back up this season.
