A report from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has suggested Steve Yzerman might be in line for a promotion despite the Red Wings lack of success this season.
The Detroit Red Wings had by far the most disappointing second half of any team in the NHL.
Heading into the Olympic break many believed they were guaranteed to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs with some even believing they could make a deep run.
However, a late season nose dive knocked them out of playoff contention extending the team’s painful playoff drought causing many fans and analysts to call for GM Steve Yzerman’s job.
Despite the pleas from fans for change, a new report from Elliotte Friedman indicates Yzerman could be getting a promotion from the Red Wings instead.

In the latest episode of 32 Thoughts, insider Elliotte Friedman spoke about the Red Wings difficult decision.
Friedman suggested that the two sides are expected to meet and that a move up to a higher position in the front office for Yzerman could be likely.
On Yzerman's future in Detroit, and the talk about him being in trouble, Elliotte wonders how Yzerman himself feels about how things are going. Elliotte mentioned again about the possibility about him bumping up in the front office.
This would mean Yzerman likely takes on a President of Hockey Operations type role while a new General Manager is brought in to run the day-to-day operations of the team.
While this would be better than no move at all, Yzerman still having his fingerprints on a team he’s failed to lead to the playoffs would be a disappointment.
