Dylan Larkin does not appear ready to change course on his trade request, even with Steve Yzerman no longer running Detroit's hockey operations.
Speculation had circulated that Yzerman stepping down as general manager could soften Larkin's stance, given reports of a strained relationship between the two.
That theory is not gaining traction, according to NHL insider Bob Duff.
Duff Pours Cold Water on the Theory
Appearing on NHL Tonight, Duff addressed the idea that a front office change would be enough to keep the Red Wings captain in Detroit. He was blunt about where things actually stand.
I don't think there's been really any change, there's no indication that the switch in management is gonna lead him to wanting to remain here
Larkin requested a trade this spring while still owed five years on his eight-year, $69.6 million contract, which includes a full no-movement clause.
Yzerman confirmed the request publicly in June, saying Larkin's agent had provided a short list of teams the captain would consider.
Since then, the Red Wings have not found a deal that satisfies their asking price, and the front office turnover has only added uncertainty to the process.
What Comes Next for Detroit
With no general manager currently in place, Detroit is not positioned to finalize a trade before training camp opens.
Larkin and his representation reportedly have not discussed a holdout, meaning he is expected to report and play if a move does not materialize.
Holding out would also cost him financially, since the Red Wings could suspend him without pay if he refused to report.
The Minnesota Wild have been viewed as a possible landing spot, sitting among Larkin's list of preferred destinations.
But league sources have suggested Detroit's management shakeup complicates any deal, since a new general manager may want more time to evaluate trade offers rather than rushing one through.
For now, the captain's future remains unresolved, and Duff's comments suggest a change in management alone will not be the thing that fixes it.
