Valeri Nichushkin wants to retire in the KHL, and his Columbus Blue Jackets contract ends the same spring he turns 35. That timing changes everything.
Valeri Nichushkin says he wants to end his career in the Kontinental Hockey League, and the Columbus Blue Jackets should be relieved.
The 31-year-old winger told RB Sport that he would like to finish in the KHL, ideally with Traktor Chelyabinsk, the club in his hometown.
His contract with Columbus runs four more seasons, through 2029-30.
That timeline is the part worth sitting with. Nichushkin turns 35 in March 2030, weeks before the deal expires.
So the Blue Jackets are not looking at a player who might leave early. They are looking at one who has already named his exit door and placed it exactly where the contract ends.
That is a rare piece of certainty for a team that has spent years planning around unknowns.
A four-year window with no negotiation attached
Don Waddell acquired Nichushkin from the Colorado Avalanche on June 25 for a 2026 second-round pick, a 2027 third and a 2028 fifth.
Every one of those picks bought term, not a rental.
Most veteran additions carry a hidden second cost, the extension conversation that starts around year three. Nichushkin has removed that cost by saying out loud where he plans to finish.

He has made this exact move before
This is not a hypothetical for Nichushkin. He left the Dallas Stars for CSKA Moscow in 2016 after a contract and role dispute, spent two seasons there, then came back in 2018.
The difference now is sequence.
The 2016 exit was a mid-career escape hatch, while this one is a retirement plan announced with four NHL seasons still on the books.
Nichushkin scored 17 goals and 49 points in 72 games last season and has reached 17 goals in five consecutive years.
Columbus bought all four remaining seasons with the ending already written.
