Maple Leafs forced to make difficult decision with Max Domi unable to walk

Domi underwent a procedure this spring that took an alarming turn. According to Steve Simmons, complications from the surgery left the veteran forward temporarily unable to walk.

Domi reportedly chose the surgeon himself, a common practice around the league, though in this case it produced serious consequences. The Maple Leafs are not being held responsible for that decision.

The encouraging news is that Domi can walk again. Still, he remains in recovery, and there is no clear timeline for his return to the ice. His status won't come into focus until an evaluation at the start of training camp.

The situation lands as an early challenge for the Leafs' rebuilt sports performance department.

General manager John Chayka brought in Andy O'Brien to lead the group, alongside Jason Martin as head of physical preparation, Josh Crouse as his assistant, Dr. Craig Slaunwhite overseeing health and performance integration, and Dr. Jordan Shallow as a human performance consultant.

Once Domi is cleared for hockey activities, that staff will design a phased return, with his long-term health prioritized over any short-term competitive need.

Chayka has already reshaped the roster this offseason, moving out Joseph Woll and Brandon Carlo while bringing in Darren Raddysh, Nick Paul, and Sergei Bobrovsky.

That added forward depth gives Toronto some breathing room if Domi's third or fourth-line role needs to be filled without him. Regardless, the Maple Leafs are being forced into a very difficult situation concerning their $3.75 million per year forward.

Training camp will offer the first real clarity on whether, and when, Domi can return this season.
