Alex Ovechkin has called North America home for more than 20 years, but the longtime Washington Capitals captain made clear this weekend that his final destination will be back where it all started.
Speaking at his annual Ovi Cup event in Moscow on Saturday, Ovechkin confirmed that once his playing days are finished, he intends to settle permanently in his native city.
Ovechkin later took the ice himself at the tournament's gala match, lining up alongside his son Sergei, who recorded a hat trick in the exhibition for the second consecutive year.

Why Moscow Still Feels Like Home
In comments given to sports.ru reporter Nikita Nadezhin, Ovechkin explained that his decision comes down to the people closest to him, since his family, friends, and loved ones are all based there.
The connection runs deeper than sentiment alone. Both of his parents were athletes for Dynamo Moscow, his mother in basketball and his father in soccer, and Ovechkin himself came up through Dynamo's youth academy before spending his first four pro seasons with the club.
He has stayed involved with the organization in an advisory capacity and has said before that he wants his very last competitive game to come in a Dynamo uniform.
Contract Status Still Unresolved
The timing is notable. Ovechkin put pen to paper on a one-year deal to stay with Washington just over a month ago, yet he still hasn't said definitively whether next season will be his final one in the league.
He does maintain North American property in the meantime, including a home in Virginia and several condos near Miami.
Ovechkin will turn 41 during his 22nd NHL season in 2026-27. Whenever he does step away, it sounds like he already knows exactly where he's headed.
