Sean Monahan Comments on the Mental Health Issues He's Faced Following Best Friend Johnny Gaudreau's Passing
This has been a tough year for everyone in the NHL after Johnny Gaudreau's passing, and now Sean Monahan has opened up about the loss of his best friend.
Over the summer, the NHL world was rocked by the sudden and tragic passing of Columbus Blue Jackets superstar Johnny Gaudreau, but his passing clearly hit others harder than others.
One player that could apply too is Sean Monahan, who grew up in the NHL alongside Gaudreau with the Calgary Flames, and before this tragedy struck, he inked a deal with Columbus to once again play alongside his best friend.
In a recent interview, Monahan revealed that he found out about Johnny's passing when he was headed to Columbus for the first time after packing up his old house to make the move.
«That's when I got the call. That's how I found out Johnny had passed.»
That was an incredibly tough and shocking call for Mony to receive, and he admits that after that, he had to get pushed to go to the rink as Johnny's passing was taking a toll on him.
«I wasn't sure, to be honest. I didn't know what was going to happen. I was in Columbus for a while and I couldn't bring myself to the rink. It was hard.
I was pushed to come to the rink by a few of the people around me, and once I got here, it really helped me out to be there. I had a lot of support from Mere (Gaudreau's wife). She's a very strong person, and that's something that helped me get by.»
In the interview, Monahan cites the support and toughness of Johnny's wife Meredith, who has been a big supporter of Sean's over the years due to his friendship with Johnny, and it's great to see that even in a tough moment like this, she was supporting her fallen partner's friends.
Since then, it's clearly still been hard on Monahan, but he has pushed through to have a fantastic year with Columbus in honour of his best friend, and while it doesn't get easier, he's managed to push through and pay tribute to Johnny every night on the ice.
