Columbus Blue Jackets Unexpectedly Place Expensive Goalie on Waivers
Goaltender Ivan Fedotov, who was just acquired by the Columbus Blue Jackets in a trade from the Philadelphia Flyers, has been put onto waivers and now has 24 hours to clear.
Not long ago, the Columbus Blue Jackets
acquired goaltender Ivan Fedotov from the Philadelphia Flyers after he failed to earn a regular spot in their goalie rotation.
His time with the Blue Jackets hasn't gotten off to the strongest of starts, either. The Blue Jackets announced that he's been placed on waivers, and he now has 24 hours to clear or otherwise be claimed by any one of the 31 other NHL clubs.
If he goes unclaimed, he'll be sent to the American Hockey League.
Details of the trade earlier in the month came from NHL analyst Chris Johnston of TSN:
The #CBJ acquire goaltender Ivan Fedotov from #flyers for a 2026 sixth-round pick
Fedotov carries a $3.275M cap hit but is owed just $775,000 in actual salary this season
Incredibly low-cost bet for Columbus
If Fedotov goes unclaimed, he'll have to continue trying to improve his game in the AHL.
Ivan Fedotov did not impress with the Flyers
Fedotov, who is physically imposing at 6'7, was taken with the 188th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by the Flyers, and he played for multiple KHL teams in his native Russia including Salavat Yulaev Ufa, CSKA Moscow and Traktor Chelyabinsk.
He came to the Flyers for the 1st time in 2023-24 and posted a 4.55 GAA in 3 total appearances.
Last year, he went 6-13-4 with a 3.15 GAA and .880 SV%.
If he wants to have a chance at making a career for himself in the NHL, those numbers will have to improve.
