The Colorado Avalanche have had two of the best forwards in the NHL in a tandem for several years now with Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen.
This season Mikko Rantanen is in the final year of his current contract and there has been optimism that a long-term deal would get done to keep things together.
However, a new report from NHL insider Pierre LeBrun has cast some doubt over this as he has revealed that Mikko Rantanen is looking to sign a record-breaking contract.
According to Pierre LeBrun sources expected Mikko Rantanen to demand over $14 million and eclipse Leon Draisaitl as the highest-paid player in the NHL.
This would be a major problem for the Avalanche as they have been very open about the internal salary cap plan to not pay any one player more than what Nathan MacKinnon currently makes.
While there is no debate whether or not Mikko Rantanen deserves a contract that could be the highest in the history of the NHL it seems that might not be possible in Colorado.
This means Mikko Rantanen will need to get his priorities figured out between making the most money he can or chasing more championships in a familiar situation.
If the Colorado Avalanche were willing to break their internal salary cap and sign Mikko Rantanen to a record-breaking deal they would need to do some major salary cap magic.
As the season goes on this will be a situation to follow particularly as the NHL Trade Deadline approaches.
