Cale Makar drove Roope Hintz into the glass in the corner Wednesday, one night after Hintz fought Nathan MacKinnon. Hintz still won it in a shootout.

Cale Makar sent Roope Hintz crashing into the boards in the corner Wednesday at Ball Arena, and Hintz's head hit the glass on the way in.
It came just one night after Hintz fought Nathan MacKinnon in Dallas, so yes, the Stars and Avalanche were never going to cool off.
Makar was back after missing Tuesday's game around the birth of his twins, and the rivalry picked up right where it left off.
Hintz finished the night as the hero.

Hintz and MacKinnon set the tone

Tuesday's fight happened in the second period and it was the first of Hintz's NHL career.
MacKinnon left for the locker room with a bloodied face, and the Avalanche went on to win 3-2.
Hintz scored in that one too.
There was real history behind it. A tangle with MacKinnon on March 6 tore Hintz's hamstring last season, and he missed the final 20 games and the entire 2026 postseason.

Hintz got the last word

Dallas won 3-2 in a shootout, and Hintz scored in the fourth round before Casey DeSmith stopped Brock Nelson to seal it.
Colorado had two goals wiped out in the first period, and Arttu Hyry gave the Stars a 2-1 lead early in the third with a short-handed goal after stealing the puck from Makar.
Nelson tied it later, and Miro Heiskanen scored for Dallas too.
The series is now tied 1-1, with the Stars at 3-3-1 and the Avalanche at 4-2-1.
Dallas heads to Chicago on Saturday, and Colorado hosts Sidney Crosby and the Penguins on Friday.
Whether the league takes a look at the Makar hit is still unclear, but these two teams meet twice more in January, and neither side looks ready to let this go.
