The Minnesota Wild and Quinn Hughes may be closer to a long-term deal than the missing signature suggests, according to NHL insider David Pagnotta.

Appearing on Off The Roster, Pagnotta addressed the state of the talks with the regular season underway and the star defenseman still unsigned. His message was calm and direct.
I think they know, if he's gonna stay, the parameters of his extension are already done, it's just a matter of when he's willing to agree.
Put simply, the framework is not the obstacle. Pagnotta indicates the major terms are understood on both sides, leaving timing and Hughes's own readiness as the last pieces to fall into place.

Why Minnesota Can Afford to Wait

The update matters for a franchise that watched the calendar flip to game days without a finished contract. Hughes is entering the final year of his current deal, and the concern around the Wild has grown now that games count.
Michael Russo has reported that Hughes could essentially write his own term and AAV with general manager Bill Guerin, which underlines how much leverage sits with the player.
Pagnotta's read suggests Minnesota has already come to terms with that reality.
For Hughes, patience has its own logic. Letting the early weeks play out gives him control over the moment, and the length, that suits him best.
The wording of Pagnotta's comment also deserves attention. It is conditional, which leaves room for the possibility, however slim, that Hughes keeps his options open beyond this season.

What Comes Next for the Wild

Every game played without a signature keeps the question alive for a fan base that is deeply invested in the former Norris Trophy winner.
The Wild gain nothing by pushing, since the groundwork is reportedly finished and the next move belongs to Hughes.
Until that moment arrives, the situation remains a waiting game. Minnesota believes the pieces are in place, and Hughes holds the pen. If the insider is right, the only real mystery left is the date on the contract.
