Chicago Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson held a media availability today where he discussed his disappointment with the team.
Few fans around the NHL expected the Chicago Blackhawks to be competitive this year, but most did not expect what we have seen.
The team currently sits in 31st place only ahead of the San Jose Sharks, who finished dead last in the standings last year as well.
Even then, it is a tight race for the draft lottery favorites as the two clubs are currently separated by just one point.
Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson spoke to the media today admitting that he was hoping to see more progress from his team in the standings this year.
However, he added that he is still happy with the direction the team is going, especially with the development of their young players.
"I did expect a little more. And, you know, we made a coaching change, as you know, because of that, you know that's a pretty big indicator that I just didn't feel like the group was where they needed to be. And so, you know, that in itself, is disappointing, but from a macro level and a much higher level view, I'm really excited and really happy with where things are headed. But, I wish we did have a little more success here in the first half than we have, but it doesn't diminish the progress that I think we are making, big picture."
Davidson specifically took some time to talk about the development of Connor Bedard.
He noted that he is not worried about the 19-year-old, saying that he hates to lose and that sometimes what he says, especially after a difficult loss, is under a bit more scrutiny as a former 1st overall pick.
Bedard has been one of the few bright spots for the Blackhawks this season.
He is up to 13 goals and 43 points in 49 games with the club, effectively matching his scoring rate from his rookie season.
His shooting percentage has also taken a slight tick upward, which is an encouraging sign considering he he scored 71 goals in 57 games during his draft season.
It will be interesting to see where the Blackhawks end up in the standings at the end of the year.
Will they win another 1st overall pick? Their chances are certainly looking pretty good at this moment.
